As if navigating through a pandemic wasn’t hard enough, now you’re skin isn’t co-operating and you’re breaking out around the chin and nose area, sound familiar?

This is a condition which has been given the term ‘mascne’ – Acne caused by wearing a mask.

Mascne can be caused by a number of factors – one being stress – stress on the body releases cortisol which can in turn unbalance other hormones in your body – hello breakouts!

The other is irritation caused by friction of the mask on your skin, something which at the moment is difficult to avoid – Protecting those around you and in your community is top priority, meaning not wearing a mask simply is not an option, but we can take measures to reduce breakouts.

How to help stress!

Although some amount of stress is always unavoidable, it is important to find ways specific to you to help reduce the amount of stress you experience!

Lavender is a known natural botanical to help reduce stress.

Try relaxing with a hot bath and one of our luxurious hand-made Lavender Dreams Seltzers. The relaxing, calming lavender Pure Essential Oil helps slip you into that tranquil “space” – want to feel even more relaxed? Light one of our sensory Lavender Votives whilst listening to our Spa Day Music playlist for the ultimate relaxing experience.

On the go and feeling stressed – carry one of our Relax Skin Silks in your bag, for a quick relaxing moment – the added ylang ylang will help contribute to the quick stress release.

Not a fan of Lavender? Our calming Breathe Soap Bar includes Eucalyptus, another natural essence with known stress reducing benefits – use it in the shower or have it as your hand soap, so every time you wash your hands you are reminded to take a moment to breathe and relax.
You could even cut it in smaller chunks and leave a piece in your clothes drawer so that your clothes smell like eucalyptus too!

Lastly, don’t forget that daily movement and finding time for yourself is more important than ever, even if it’s only a short walk or 10 minutes of yoga after a day at work!

How to help with breakouts!

It is recommended to wash your cloth masks every time you wear them to reduce irritation.
As well as that, a good refreshing skin care routine is key!

For normal/dry skin use our soothing Cool as a Cucumber Soap Bar, which contains Aloe Vera to help hydrate your face after a day spent wearing a mask.
For oily and acne prone skin, use our energizing Tea Tree Basil and Mint Soap Bar, it has ingredients known to fight acne!
Either one of these Soap Bars will leave your face feel moisturized and refreshed!

After washing your face with our Soap Bars, use our specialty Clearly Canadian Facial Grains they are a natural exfoliator, which can be used as a face scrub or made into a mask to leave on for 15-20 minutes before washing off.

For the areas that need that little extra help our Tea Tree Essential Oil can be mixed 1 part Essential Oil, 9 parts water and then applied to problem areas using a cotton swab.

With this routine, we are sure your skin will be left feeling smooth, moisturized and hopefully blemish free!

But remember, everyone is struggling through this pandemic, it is more than ok to talk to friends and seek help if you are struggling with the negative effects the mask is having on your skin. You are not alone!
